Mt Elgon Expeditions Mt Elgon (4321m) is the eighth highest mountain in Africa and the second largest freestanding volcanic base in the world rising more than 3000m above the surrounding plains and dominating the local landscape. Summiting Wagagai Peak is definitely a highlight of any trip to Uganda and we have a variety of packages to suit your needs. Click here for detailed information of our packages...
Climbing/Abseiling
Climbing on nearby crags can be arranged, as can abseil descents of the main Sipi Falls. There are a variety of climbs to suit all standards, made up from 10 sport climbing routes bolted into the cliff face adjacent to Sipi Falls. Abseiling options range from 'easy' 25m descents all the way to the 100m waterfall descent. Robs Rolling Rock - a Ugandan company initially trained by Italian climbers - operates climbing and abseiling activities. Sipi River Lodge also provides CE approved climbing helmets for these activities free of charge.
Mountain Biking
The potential for mountain biking here is huge! I've been heading out with friends into the hills and valleys around Sipi and what we've found so far is incredible. Long fast sections of single track, technical rocky sections and some epic climbs back out of the valley floor.
If you're looking for a more relaxed ride then you can choose a shorter easier route, or even just do the downhill and have a boda-boda pick you up back to the top. We currently do NOT have mountain bikes for hire - just our own personal bikes - but if you're a keen biker then bring your bike and we'll be happy to show you the routes!!
Trekking
The Mt Elgon region is without a doubt one of the greatest places for trekking in East Africa and Sipi Falls is the ideal location to base yourself. Short hikes in and around the local area can be arranged to see the plethora of waterfalls, breathtaking landscape and abundant birdlife. These walks can take anywhere between 1 to 4 hours, depending on routes taken. Longer hikes can be arranged for those feeling a bit more active, perhaps circumnavigating the Mount Elgon National Park boundaries, or hiking within the park where you can view several species of flora and fauna. Multi-day hikes are also available for those who want to really 'get out there'. Click here for guiding rates.
Archery
Come and learn how to shoot like Robin Hood in our stunning grounds at the base of Kapsururu Falls. Our Trained Instructors will give you expert tuition and keep you on target throughout the session. We have a range of bows to fit every size of Archer.
Currently we're not operating Archery sessions - however if you're really keen then send us an email and we might be able to arrange it for you
Bird Watching
Within the grounds of Sipi River Lodge, several species of bird have been identified. The gardens are the perfect place to explore and spot birds as they keep a keen eye on the surrounding fruit bushes.
Close to home, Mount Elgon National Park is home to 296 species of birds, including several species unique to the Mount Elgon area.
Fly Fishing
Located within the secluded upper reaches of the Sipi River, Rainbow Trout fly fishing is currently 'catch and release' only. Rods and equipment are available for hire and tuition and clinics are available on request. Trout Fishing is organised via Elgon Trout Fishing. Click here for further information
